class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer lies in one important cultural concept: <strong>Japan is a high-context culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is a High-Context Culture?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a high-context culture, people don\u2019t rely only on words to communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, they also pay attention to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the situation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>facial expressions,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tone of voice,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>relationships,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, <strong>what isn\u2019t said can be just as important as what is said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, when a Japanese person says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThat might be a little difficult\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ll think about it.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMaybe next time.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">they may actually be politely saying <strong>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be confusing for people from countries where communication is more direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is a Low-Context Culture?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, and many others are generally considered <strong>low-context cultures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are encouraged to express their opinions clearly and directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of hinting, they are more likely to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI disagree.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither style is better than the other\u2014they simply reflect different cultural values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding Japan Becomes Much Easier<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you understand high-context communication, many everyday situations in Japan suddenly make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why do people avoid saying \u201cno\u201d directly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why do meetings sometimes end without a clear answer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why do Japanese people often apologize even when something isn\u2019t
